About The Artist
John has been passionate about art since he was a young child. In the 1970’s he attended evening and weekend art workshops and attended several summer schools run by the University of Otago.
John’s tutors have included Paul Olds, Gordon Crook, Jeanne Macaskill, Doris Lusk, Don Binney, and Quentin McFarlane.
John commenced watercolour painting in 1999 following retirement. This medium was chosen because of its purity and the diversity of effects which can be speedily achieved.
John’s original objective was to present a romantic approach to painting landscapes and seascapes but more recently he has concentrated on gardens and trees with an emphasis on colour and pattern. John is interested in pointalism for the more vivid colour results it can achieve. He is also moving towards more abstract outcomes.
For his acrylic on canvas paintings John constantly refers to many artists but in particular to Monet, Van Gogh, Matise, and more recent artists such as Patrick Heron and Mark Rothco.
John has regularly exhibited with The New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts and with Watercolour New Zealand for sixteen years as well as other venues.
